Surfblanks foam is one of the best in the world because we have two of the best /dedicated people working on it – Midget and Max . They are both ex top class surfers and shapers . Max has been in the surfboard industry for 50 year and midget has been blending foam for 30 years . With midgets skills on the chemicals and Max’s know-how on process and building they have combined to produce a top class blank .
The foam has a tight cell which doesn’t suck much resin so the glasser can achieve the optimal resin to fiber glass ratios which means a stronger board . The blanks has the highest strength to weight ratio around . Our green (light weight ) blanks cant be matched by any other blank blower in the world as yet .
The molds don’t really affect the boards but a good shaped mold makes it easy for the shaper to produce a quality surfboard . Now with an abundance of shaping machines the plug shape will change again to accommodate them – extra thickness . The humidity in Durban does promote/aid the blowing process but this is only about 1% of the process .
The stringers we use are industry standard . They are only there to keep the required rocker and for cosmetics . They don’t add much strength , the strength comes from the glassing . There is a lot of variation on this when you speak to different people but as usual people will say anything to make there product sound better . There is a flex and weight component that I feel only top class surfers can appreciate . The unidirectional pine is the best stringer for the green blank . The Obeshe is a nice wood for the blues because it is lighter and easy to shape .
We use a specially designed glue (Midget) that doesn’t chip and scratch the foam when shaping . In fact you cant see the glue-up line , the glue seems to blend with the wood and foam.
Chad Reid Surfblanks Supplier.
One of the primary reason behind the success of Bilt Surfboards Handcrafted in South Africa, is the quality of the blanks used in the production process. The foam is the most vital component of the product – without good foam you have nothing. Chad Reid from Surfblanks explains why their foam is superior.

“Surfblanks foam is one of the best in the world because we have two of the best and dedicated people working on it – Midget Farrely and Max Wetteland. They are both former top class surfers and shapers. Max has been in the surfboard industry for 50 years, and Midget has been blending foam for 30 years. With Midgets’ skills on the chemicals and Max’s know-how on processes and building, they have combined to produce a top class blank.

The molds don’t really affect the boards, but a good shaped mold obviously makes it easy for the shaper to produce a quality surfboard. The humidity in Durban does promote and assist the blowing process but this is only about 1% of the process.
The stringers we use are industry standard. They are only there to keep the required rocker and for cosmetics. They don’t add much strength actually, with most of the strength coming from the glassing.

All in, our blank are some of the best in the world and contribute to make Bilt Surfboards on top of their game in the world-wide board making arena.”
