Davey Weare Joins Bilt

Durban - Bilt South Africa is proud to welcome top South African surfer Davey Weare onto the team. Davey has long been one of the most talented and successful surfers to come out of South Africa, spending 2006 on the World Championship Tour, notching up event wins around the world, as well as releasing a signature DVD called Ignite.

Davey joins other top riders like Warwick Wright, Damien Fahrenfort, Dan Redman, Chad Du Toit and Beyrick de Vries on the team, but his involvement is set to run a little deeper with the company.

"I'm really excited about joining Bilt," said Davey after inking the deal. "I'm looking forward to the future with being involved with the research and development, helping to manage the Bilt surfing team and building the Bilt brand. I'm also excited about releasing my signature high performance model."

Davey is competing full time on the 2008 World Qualifying Series with the distinct goal of requalifying for the 2009 World Championship Tour. Along the way he is going to be working closely with the Bilt brand and is planning on releasing an epoxy version of his signature board that will be up there with the top epoxy models on the market.

"I feel that it's the right time for Bilt and myself to be joining forces," said Davey of their five-year agreement. "I'll be working with Elton Fursman on my signature models and it'll be great to finally ride boards that Elton gets full credit for."

Bilt South Africa owner Jason Ribbink was enthusiastic about the partnering with Dave. "From our side we're obviously super stoked to have Davey on board,"said Ribbink of Weare's signing. "A surfer of his calibre and pedigree brings a fresh perspective to the company, and Davey still has a long and illustrious career in surfing ahead of him."

Davey will be heading off overseas to start his 2008 campaign shortly, with three six star prime WQS events back-to-back, including the Quiksilver Pro Durban at his home break New Pier in April. --

Young Skulls Surfing Club grommet Cody Coetsee (7) was super stoked to be presented with his new Bilt surfboard, by two of his heroes, renowned Big Wave rider Jason Ribbink, and current world number ?? Davey Weare. Also present was top South African surfboard shaper Elton Fursman, who had shaped Cody’s board using the Davey Weare template. “It’s the smallest board I’ve ever shaped, but then Cody’s the smallest surfer I’ve ever seen. It’s hard to imagine that he’s been surfing for 3 years already!” joked Elton.

“We had been looking for some time for a really young, up and coming surfer to join the Bilt team, and Cody was the ideal choice,” said Jason. “Beginner surfers are starting at younger ages all the time, and we needed a hot young surfer to test our latest board designs for kids. More often than not, you will see young kids trying to learn to surf on Dad’s board. This is much the same as learning to cycle using Dad’s bicycle. Kids are very light, and find it impossible to turn a long, heavy board. The Bilt team has therefore developed a range of kids’ boards, which have stability, but can also be turned by the rider.”

When asked to comment on the performance of the new board, Cody replied “I like the flames on my board best, they are so cool.”
