Bilt Rider Davey Weare Secures Third In Scotland
Thurso, Thurso East, Scotland - Durban surfer Davey Weare, fresh off his incredible win at the Six Star Prime Quiksilver Pro Durban, went on to score a solid third place finish at the O'Neill Highland Open Six Star Prime event in Scotland.

Weare, who has shown inspired surfing since climbing onto his new Bilt surfboards, has been on a run recently, with two victories, a second place and a third place finish in 4 events. Davey won the O'Neill Scottburgh Open, got a close second at the Coppa Del Volcom at New Pier, and won the Quiksilver Pro Durban before securing this third place result in the O'Neill Highland Open.

Davey secured 3000 points for his victory at the Quiksilver Pro Durban, and 2250 for this result, giving him 5250 points for two events. A former ASP top 45 surfer, Davey sits as a favourite for a spot in next year's Dream Tour.

"It was a really close heat and one wave made the difference again," Weare said of his semi-final loss. "Priorities play a major part in man-on-man heats and Adam (Robertson) got the ultimate better wave to make it. It has been a really successful trip to Scotland for me and it is a very good result. I will be back for sure." The event was won by Adam Robertson (Victoria, AUS) from Adam Melling (Gold Coast, Aus) in the glassy three-foot surf of Thurso East.

Davey has been heaping praise over his recent contest results on his shaper, Elton Fursman, who has made him some dream boards recently. "I am so stoked to have these boards underfoot, and to be working with Elton on my equipment," said Davey. "The boards I have are giving me so much confidence, and I have been training hard as well. So it's all working out for me."

Weare Beats Ware To Win Quiksilver Pro Durban In Great Surf At Ansteys Beach On The Bluff
Bluff, Durban – An inspired performance from Durban’s Davey Weare saw him surf to victory against USA’s Austin Ware in excellent surf at Ansteys on the Bluff near Durban. Utilising their Prime-status alternative venue, the contest organisers had little hesitation in choosing Ansteys for the final day of surfing at the Quiksilver Pro Durban. “Ansteys was always on the radar,” said contest director Matt Wilson of the venue choice for the day. “There’s not much happening at New Pier, or anywhere else on the coast, and we’re seeing some great waves here. The surfers are happy, so it was the right decision to make.” A day of great surfing, big moves and barrel rides ensued, with some explosive match-ups the order of the day.

Josh Kerr from Australia was in the first heat of the day against fellow Australian Shaun Cansdell, and won it convincingly with big turns and some trade-mark airs. “This is a great wave and stoked we moved here,” said Kerr of the new location. “These waves have plenty of push and there’s opportunities for big scores, so it definitely was a good idea to move the event. I got lucky in that heat by catching the good ones, but a win’s a win, so I’ll take it.”

The last local surfer Davey Weare surfed a red-hot heat against German surfer Marlon Lipke, with the Durban surfer sneaking into some tight barrels and off-the top combinations to keep the local hopes alive. One wave in particular looked like a perfect barrel but Davey was clipped while exiting the tube. Still, he had done enough to win the heat. “My first wave was a great one, with a little barrel and a nice hook,” said Davey. “I though that I was going to make that second barrel, and if I had it would have taken some of the pressure off the heat, but it still worked out alright for me.”

The quarter-finals took to the water at low tide, and there were some hollow sections and a few little barrels coming through for the last eight surfers. Emerging victorious from their encounters were Josh Kerr who defeated Austin Ware, Jihad Khodr who defeated Heitor Alves, David Weare who eliminated Dustin Barca, and Portuguese surfer Tiago Pires who took out Leigh Sedley from Australia. “Well, the waves are fine here at Ansteys. We got a few good ones in that heat,” said Tiago afterwards. “I much prefer the waves at New Pier, but there’s nothing there today, so we’re lucky with these waves.”

In the first semi-final Austin Ware from America eliminated Brazilian Jihad Kodre from the event, after Jihad’s best wave scored a zero. Ware had priority at the time, and was up and riding on the inside when Jihad took off. “I went for that wave as I needed an early start. I didn’t even see what Jihad was doing,” said Ware of the incident. “Still, stoked to get so far. This is my first six star final, so I am absolutely pumped!”

Davey Weare turned the heat on against Tiago Pires in the second semi-final and surfed an inspired heat in front of his home crowd. Davey linked his scoring waves all the way through to the shorebreak with some good combinations of moves and impressive laybacks. “I was so stoked to hear the crowds cheering me after every wave,” said Davey, commenting on the vocal local crowd. I’ve got my wife and my daughter and family here, my dad, and all my best friends. It’s unreal to hear their support.” Davey was looking relaxed and surfing smoothly in the clean conditions at Ansteys.

The Quiksilver Pro Junior hit the water just prior to the main final, and was a tightly contested final between Klee Strachan from Warner Beach and Nick Godfrey from St Francis. Near the end of the heat it was Godfrey in the lead and with priority when he gave a wave to Strachan. Klee maximised the opportunity, pulled off a big turn on the outside and weaved his way all the way through to the shorebreak for a massive hit, a big score and the Pro Junior title.

The tide had moved in for the final of the main event between Weare and Ware, but the waves were still pumping. Davey’s first scoring wave consisted of a clean tube ride and a big close-out move, and he just improved from then onwards. Without wishing to detract from Austin’s performance, Davey Weare peaked during the final and was clearly going to win it. He followed up with two more big scores that showed off his repertoire of futuristic airs and big turns, and Austin was left needing a 9-plus score to get into the lead. Austin was gracious in his defeat, praising Weare on his performance, and it was a very stoked Davey who emerged from the water the Quiksilver Pro Durban 2008 Champion.

“So incredibly happy right now,” said Davey on the beach just seconds before he was hoisted up on his friends shoulders and carried up the beach. “I had a good start, and during the event whenever I had a good start I seemed to do well. I’m a bit overwhelmed right now, I can’t remember all that went on in the heat. The support really did help, so thanks to all those people who were cheering me on from the beach.”

Weare wins US$15,000 and 3000 points for his efforts, and solidifies his hunt for a spot on the coveted World Tour in 2009.

Bilt Surf Davey Weare Blog: "6* Prime WQS Win - Dream Come True!!!":

Wow, what a week. To have won the 6* prime Quiksilver Pro Durban event at home is amazing!!!! This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid and I still can't believe it has come true.

We had great waves for the event, classic weather, some amazing surfing was done throughout the week and some classic times had by the local and international surfers. I think it will still take a few days for this win to sink in cause right now it feels like i just surfed a few heats on saturday. But what I can say is that the support I had from my family, friends and other South Africans was absolutely amazing, just the craziest and coolest thing ever. Having the crowd going crazy after every wave and then when they counted the final down , the whole beach just erupted, I won't forget that for a very long time!!!! I owe alot to the crowd cause their support definitely pushed me to try harder and surf with more confidence!

So a nice start to the year, second event and I'm lying 12th on the QS, off to Scotland tomorrow for the 6* Prime event at Thurso, Oneill Highland Open, starting wednesday 23rd and running through till the 30th.

Davey Weare Wins Again On Bilt Surfboards
Durban - After a brilliant week of surfing and dominating, Davey Weare convincingly won the Quiksilver Pro Durban at Ansteys on The Bluff. In the final against American surfer Austin Ware, Davey turned on the heat and left his competitor in the dust, so to speak, with a controlled display of radical surfing, big airs, barrel-rides and reverses. It was case of completely out-classing his competition, and Dave looked supremely confident on his new sticks.

"I got these new Bilt boards that Elton Fursman made for me, and I'm so confident with them. It feels like a load of work has already been done before I hit the water," said Dave of his new quiver. "I surfed two boards for this event, the smaller one for the waves at New Pier during the week, and a slightly bigger one for the waves at Ansteys," continued Weare. "They both fitted well into the curves of the waves at New Pier and Ansteys. They both flew and felt like 'magic' boards. So stoked!"

Davey has been on a winning streak since he joined Bilt, winning the O'Neill Scottburg Open, getting a close second at the recent Volcom event at New Pier, and now victory at the Quiksilver Pro Durban Six Star Prime. US$15,000 and 3000 valuable points came Davey's way after the win, a great, bankable pile of points on his way to qualifying for the 2009 World Tour. Dave is currently competing in the six star prime O'Neill Highland Open Six Star Prime WQS event in Scotland, where he hopes to bank another good result.

Dave's new 6'1 and 6'0 boards are paramount in his current roll. "I finally have my boards where I want them," said Dave of his equipment, "I'm also stoked that my boards worked so well when the waves got a bit of juice at Ansteys."

Davey had local boy support throughout the event, and was quick to point out that this really helped him on his route to victory, along with his training, diet and equipment program that has come together. "I've been putting in the effort, and it is paying off. I now feel confident and relaxed, and that feels great."

Davey Weare Wins Again On Bilt Surfboards

'The Eddie' Opens at Waimea Bay - Written by Tina Chau - tchau@kgmb9.com

The holding period for the prestigious Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational In Memory of Eddie Aikau contest begins tomorrow.

The unique one-day event can be held only on a day when wave-face heights are at least in the 30- to 40-foot range and rideable at Waimea Bay. The contest can run any day between tomorrow and Feb. 29, 2008.

Four spots were added to the field of invited competitors this season, bringing the total to 28.

For the first time, invitations were extended to surfers from Asia, South America, Africa and Europe.

Representing those regions are Takayuki Wakita of Japan, Carlos Burle of Brazil, Jason Ribbink, owner of Bilt Surf, South Africa, and Ibon Amatriain of Spain.

Sixteen Hawai'i surfers are in the field this season, including defending champion Bruce Irons of Kaua'i.

Irons won the contest in December 2004 — the last time conditions were good enough to run the event.

Because of the strict standards for the contest, it has been completed only seven times since it was formed in 1986.

HUBBARD BROTHERS LEADING USBA TOUR

Kaua'i siblings Jeff and David Hubbard are atop the standings of the United States Bodyboarding Association's 2007 national championship tour with one event remaining.

Jeff is ranked No. 1 in the men's pro division. He has won three of the five contests held so far, including the Rosarita Beach Pro at Baja, Mexico, earlier this month.

Hawai'i bodyboarders take up the top six places in the national rankings. In order behind Jeff Hubbard are Spencer Skipper, David Hubbard, Jacob Romero, Rex Moribe and Jonah Romero.

David Hubbard is also ranked No. 1 in the drop-knee division, which is for competitors who ride with a one-knee stance. He won the drop-knee division at the Rosarita Beach Pro.

Jeff Hubbard is ranked No. 2 in the drop-knee division.

The final event of the national tour is the Maui Ledges Pro at Kahului Harbor, Dec. 13 to 23.

Beyrick “Thulani” de Vries of South Africa
“The Quiet One” Makes Waves in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, USA
Beyrick "Thulani" de Vries

14 year old Beyrick spoke volumes at last weekend’s Twenty-Fourth Annual WaveMasters Surf Contest, scoring the event’s highest overall heat tally and winning his division. Florida’s Bilt Surfboards brought the Bilt South Africa team rider to Cocoa Beach, Florida to begin his USA tour. Beyrick will be competing in both Florida and Southern California over the next two months against USA and International top talent.

Beyrick De Vries from Umhlanga continued his rise to stardom with some exceptional surfing in the Grom Division (14 years and younger). Following a string of successful events in Australia recently, De Vries was able to notch up an important win with some high-class surfing in the final. De Vries finished ahead of Cape Town wunderkind Matt Bromley, who despite surfing exceptionally well throughout the event, had to settle for second place. St. Francis Bay’s Nick Godfrey took third ahead of Mike February (CT).

12.13.06 South African Surfer Dominates in Excellent Waves at Duranbahwith former "Saffer" now Gold Coast local Thomas "Tiger" Woods set to take him on as finals approach!
We all figured young 13 year old South African surfer Beyrick De Vries from Durban would be a competent surfer, but no one was ready for the outstanding performance he put on in the great 1 to 1.5m surf at Duranbah on day three of the Rip Curl GromSearch.

De Vries simply charged the waves performing multiple big tail slides and aerials to demolish his opponents posting two outstanding 9 point rides and the events highest scoring heat tally to date of 18.54 out of a possible 20.

But can he win here? ・Talking with De Vries after his win there has to be some doubts!

"I've made plenty of finals in South Africa over the past 12 months but I never win, something goes wrong for me in the finals! I'm definitely surfing a lot better this year than last year so hopefully I can start to win but to now I've never won! I'm here through to February to surf in as many events as I can and I'm already enjoying the great waves, especially today."

De Vries was not the only international to standout in today's high quality round two of the 14 and under Boys who scored the best Duranbah waves seen for some time. Tahitian Enrique Ariitu also scored an excellent 8.17 ride in his comprehensive win.

Australian surfers were also in good form today and scored big and there'll be plenty of interest in the coming days in this division to see how the locals take on these two very talented internationals.

Local Gold Coast surfers lead by the dynamic Woods brothers, who have relocated to Coolangatta from Cape Town South Africa just on 12 months ago are both well in contention following big round two heat wins today.

Elder brother James 15 won 16 and under heat convincingly and younger brother Thomas "Tiger", just 13, today posted a very strong win in the 14 and under division. James commented on the move to Australia saying "We love it here and it's definitely improved both our surfing. There's waves everywhere and competitions all over the place which is great!" Whenever the South African's come here to compete we link up which is great ・Beyrick's form today was incredible, Thomas had the upper hand on him in Sth Africa but Beyrick has improved a lot, a real lot - and it should be great to watch them surf against each other in the coming days!"

Sunshine Coast's Bradley Homan (13 years/Noosa) was the most impressive Australian winner, scoring an outstanding 9.77, the events highest single wave score to date in his big round two win ・After his win Homan said "That was a really good heat for me, the good waves just kept coming and I'm keen and confident to do well in the next few days but it's sure to be hard as there's a lot of good surfers here!"

Newcastle surfer Jake Sylvester (13 Merewether) was also in great form and he is a very experienced competitive surfer who certainly knows how to win! Focused after his win today Sylvester said ・"I've won four GromSearch events in the 12 and under and I won the 14 and under division in Newcastle a few months ago so I'm keen to take another win, especially here because this is the best field I've surfed in ・there's great surfers everywhere, locals, other states and internationals, it will be hard to win!"

The 16 and under Boy and Girl winners here will go onto the National GromSearch Final at Bells Beach next Autumn and from there, winners go to the International GromSearch Final which runs as a specialty event at Bells Beach during the World Championship event at Easter!
