Damian ‘Dooma’ Fahrenfort, aged 20.
One of the best-travelled surfers in the country, Dooma has been everywhere. He has travelled the world to see it, to surf it, and to gain points and experience on his ride to the upper echelons of pro surfing. Dooma has appeared in surf movies around the world and has been a poster boy, getting slotted at the Super Bank for Tracks Magazine. His profile is currently running in the new issue of Zigzag Magazine (www.zigzag.co.za).
Originally from Cape Town, Dooma learned to surf amongst the cold, hard and unforgiving reefbreaks of the peninsula. Whilst learning the hard knocks of surfing these waves, Damien applied himself to learning all the tricks and moves needed to appease the judges on the local domestic surfing circuit. An extremely successful junior surfer, Dooma had his sights set a lot higher. He made it through the trials and into the main event of the Billabong Pro last year at J-Bay. His first heat was against Slate and Bruce Irons, and Dooma showed incredible composure and big-match temperament to hold the win for a few minutes of the heat. “Then Slater stood up on his first wave and it was over,” joked Dooma afterwards.
Likeable and a sponsor’s dream, Dooma works hard on all aspects of his surfing career. When the giant outer reefs of Cape Town start showing and he’s in town, he’s always ready to give them a paddle. One of the dynamic new young crew, Dooma will charge the Sunset bommie on his gun one day and win heats in two foot slop the next.
